San Diego's Premium & Commercial Appliance Specialists

Most appliance companies send one generalist to every job. We don't work that way.

Big Joe Appliance Repair Service runs separate teams: one for premium refrigeration — Sub-Zero, Wolf, Viking, Thermador, Miele, BlueStar — one for commercial kitchen and refrigeration equipment, and one for standard household appliances. Three of our eight technicians work exclusively on sealed systems: compressors, condensers, evaporators and refrigerant work.

We also run our own workshop and parts warehouse. Heavy premium components — compressors, condensers, gaskets — are stocked, not ordered. When a fault is difficult to reproduce on site, we can bring the unit to our bench for extended testing, confirm the repair holds, and deliver it back. That's why most repairs are finished within three days of the first visit, and simple jobs the same day.

Nothing gets subcontracted. Every repair is done by our own team.

Call 858-224-9188 — 7am to 7pm, every day.

Sub-Zero Rebuilds — When Everyone Else Says Replace

When a Sub-Zero built-in reaches 15–20 years, most companies won't touch it. They quote you two new units and walk away.

We rebuild it instead. A full Sub-Zero rebuild replaces the sealed system, compressor, gaskets, evaporator fan and control board — every internal component of the fridge and freezer sections — using genuine OEM parts. You keep the cabinet and the panels that match your kitchen. You get a 3-year warranty on the work.

For a built-in that cost $12,000–$18,000 to install, a rebuild is usually a fraction of replacement — with no cabinetry work, no re-fitting, no weeks without a refrigerator.

Recent rebuild: a Sub-Zero built-in in Rancho Santa Fe. Another company had refused the job and quoted a full replacement of both units. We rebuilt it completely — $7,800, backed by a 3-year warranty.

Ask about a Sub-Zero rebuild — call 858-224-9188.

Recent Repairs

Sub-Zero built-in — full rebuild · Rancho Santa Fe · $7,800 Another company declined the repair and recommended replacing both the refrigerator and freezer units as too old. We rebuilt the entire system — sealed system, compressor, gaskets, fan, control board — all genuine OEM. Backed by a 3-year warranty.

Wolf range — control fault · $2,200 The previous company had replaced the control board and chased a wiring fault without success. We traced the actual problem — an error introduced during that earlier repair — corrected it, and brought the range back into service.

KitchenAid built-in refrigerator — electrical fault A short circuit in the wiring and control board. Three companies had already failed to fix it and told the owner to replace the unit. We found the fault and repaired it — the built-in stayed in the kitchen.

A pattern we see constantly: customers come to us after two or three companies have given up.

Why San Diego Homeowners Choose Big Joe

We diagnose it once and fix it once. Our goal is a repair that holds, not a callback every six months. When we're inside an appliance, we look for what's about to fail next and tell you before it does.

Repair vs. replace — a clear rule. We recommend replacement only when the repair would cost more than 80% of a comparable new unit. Below that — especially with built-in and premium appliances — repair is almost always the better decision. We'll tell you honestly which side of that line you're on.

We don't push you toward the expensive option — or hide the cheaper one. When a lower-cost alternative exists, we explain it, along with its risks, and let you decide.

Family owned, not a franchise. The owner personally handles premium jobs and oversees dispatch. Two technical degrees and a lifetime of taking things apart to understand how they work.

Licensed, insured, and accountable. California Appliance Service Dealer #49242, fully insured, EPA-certified for all refrigerant types, with ongoing manufacturer training.

Fixed prices where we can give them. Some jobs have a known price — an LG compressor replacement runs $1,100–$1,200, a drain pump is $420 on LG and $450 on Samsung. But most quotes come after the on-site diagnostic, because the same symptom can have several very different causes. Identifying the real cause is the most important part of the job.

Payment: credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, cash, check, wire transfer.

Warranty

Premium appliances — 1 to 3 years on parts and labor, depending on the appliance and the scope of work. A full Sub-Zero rebuild carries a 3-year warranty. Extended coverage is available on request.

Standard appliances — up to 3 months on labor and up to 1 year on parts we replace.

We stand behind the work. If a covered repair fails, we come back. If your warranty lapsed by a few days, we'll still take care of it. And if the same fault returns a year or two later, we offer a substantial discount on that repair.

How It Works

2. We arrive in a 2–3 hour window. Call before 10–11am and we'll be there the same day. Calls after 3–4pm are scheduled for the next day. Evening and weekend appointments available. The technician calls 20 minutes before arrival.

Below that, repair — especially for built-in and premium appliances, where replacement also means cabinetry and installation costs. We'll tell you which side of that line your appliance falls on.

What warranty do you offer? Premium appliance repairs carry 1 to 3 years on parts and labor, depending on the appliance and the work performed. Standard repairs carry up to 3 months on labor and up to 1 year on parts. If the same fault returns after the warranty period, we offer a significant discount on that repair.

Do you repair commercial kitchen equipment? Yes. We service walk-in coolers and freezers, commercial refrigerators, ovens, mixers including Hobart, and hoods and ventilation systems. We also handle installation and commissioning of commercial ovens and ventilation. The commercial diagnostic is $150. Call 858-224-9188.

How long will the repair take? Most repairs are completed within three days of the first visit. Common jobs are finished on the spot, since our technicians carry frequently used parts and we stock heavy premium components in our own warehouse. Rare parts may take longer, and we'll tell you upfront.

Professional Evaporator Coil & Suction Line Replacement and Maintenance

Professional Evaporator Coil & Suction Line Replacement and Maintenance

Date: 05/18/2026

Brand: Sub-zero

Service: Refrigerator Repair

Category: Refrigerators

Location: Rancho Santa Fe San Diego County, CA, US

A Sub-Zero refrigerator may continue running even when the cooling performance has already started to decline. In older units, sealed system components naturally wear out over time, especially after many years of operation. We recently serviced an older built-in Sub-Zero refrigerator in the Rancho Bernardo area where the customer reported unstable temperatures and excessive compressor run time. After performing a complete diagnostic inspection, we discovered several sealed system issues including a leaking evaporator, restricted refrigerant flow, and a weak compressor that was no longer operating efficiently. Due to the age of the refrigerator and the condition of the sealed system, a full sealed system upgrade was recommended to restore proper cooling performance and long-term reliability. During this repair, we replaced the evaporator coil, compressor, filter drier, refrigerant lines, and capillary system components. We also installed new door gaskets to improve insulation and reduce moisture intrusion inside the refrigerator compartment. The entire sealed system was flushed, pressure tested, vacuumed, and recharged with refrigerant according to Sub-Zero service standards. After the repair was completed, the refrigerator returned to stable temperatures and normal operating cycles. On older Sub-Zero units, upgrading worn sealed system components can significantly improve cooling efficiency and extend the life of the appliance for many additional years. Common signs of sealed system problems may include long compressor run times, unstable temperatures, weak cooling performance, excess moisture or frost buildup, and the refrigerator struggling to maintain proper temperatures. Early diagnosis can help prevent more serious compressor damage and more expensive future repairs.

Professional Sub-Zero Ice Maker Repair

Professional Sub-Zero Ice Maker Repair

Date: 02/06/2026

Brand: Sub-zero

Service: Commercial Ice Machine Repair

Category: Refrigerators

Location: Rancho Santa Fe San Diego County, CA, US

If a Sub-Zero ice maker stops producing ice or begins leaking, the issue is often internal and cannot be properly repaired inside the home. Ice makers are complex sealed components that rely on precise water flow, refrigeration pressure, and temperature control. Over time, internal parts wear out, mineral buildup forms, and small leaks or mechanical failures can develop. We recently serviced a Sub-Zero ice maker for a customer in San Diego that was producing little to no ice. The unit was still powered on, but performance was inconsistent. After inspection, we determined that the repair required full disassembly and detailed diagnostics that are not possible on-site. For this reason, we removed the ice maker and transported it to our workshop. In our shop, the unit was completely disassembled, tested, and repaired using manufacturer-approved procedures. Worn components were replaced, internal passages were cleaned, and the system was carefully inspected to ensure reliable operation. After repairs were completed, the ice maker was tested for proper ice production, leak-free operation, and stable performance. Once testing was complete, the ice maker was delivered back to the customer and reinstalled. The unit returned to normal ice production. Problems like this develop gradually. Early signs include reduced ice output, unusual noises, or intermittent operation. Addressing these issues early helps prevent more serious damage. Big Joe Appliance Repair services Sub-Zero ice makers throughout San Diego County and is always available to help.

Professional Evaporator Coil & Suction Line Replacement and Maintenance

Professional Evaporator Coil & Suction Line Replacement and Maintenance

Date: 12/23/2025

Brand: Sub-zero

Service: Refrigerator Repair

Category: Refrigerators

Location: Rancho Santa Fe San Diego County, CA, US

If a Sub-Zero refrigerator is running but not cooling well, the problem is often the evaporator. This part is located behind the rear panel and is responsible for making cold air. Over time, the metal can wear out and a refrigerant leak can start. We recently repaired a compact Sub-Zero 700BR2 refrigerator in a home located in Rancho Santa Fe. The refrigerator was running, but the temperature inside was too warm. Our diagnosis showed a leak in the evaporator coil. It is important to understand that problems like refrigerant leaks happen slowly, not all at once. At first, the refrigerator starts running longer than normal. The air coming from the compressor feels very warm. Later, the unit may hardly turn off at all. Over time, the temperature inside keeps getting warmer and warmer until the refrigerator can no longer cool properly. Finding this problem early is very important. If a refrigerator keeps running with a leak, the compressor can become overloaded and fail. When that happens, the repair becomes much more expensive and may require a full system rebuild. During this repair, we replaced the evaporator coil, the suction line with the capillary tube, and the filter drier. The system was fully flushed, vacuumed, and recharged with refrigerant. The compressor was also checked for proper operating pressure. All work was done according to Sub-Zero factory standards. After the repair, the refrigerator returned to normal and stable cooling. Sub-Zero refrigerators are built to last, but over time even high-quality parts can wear out. In compact models like the 700BR2, an evaporator problem can affect the entire refrigerator. Things to watch for: The refrigerator runs longer than it used to Cooling takes more time than before The compressor rarely turns off The refrigerator does not feel the same as it used to If you own a Sub-Zero refrigerator or any other brand, do not ignore small changes. Small problems can turn into big and expensive repairs. If you have any questions or notice changes in how your refrigerator is working, feel free to call Big Joe Appliance Repair to schedule a diagnostic visit. We will be happy to help. We service Sub-Zero refrigerators throughout San Diego and San Diego County, including Rancho Santa Fe, Rancho Peñasquitos, La Jolla, Del Mar, and Cardiff, Rancho Bernardo, Solana Beach, San Elijo.

Evaporator Coil Replacement & Professional Maintenance

Evaporator Coil Replacement & Professional Maintenance

Date: 12/23/2025

Brand: Sub-zero

Service: Refrigerator Repair

Category: Refrigerators

Location: La Jolla San Diego County, CA, US

If your Sub-Zero freezer is no longer freezing properly, even though the compressor and fan are running, the issue is often a leaking or corroded evaporator coil. We recently helped a homeowner in La Jolla who experienced a slow refrigerant leak from the evaporator coil located behind the rear panel. This is a common problem in older Sub-Zero 500 and 600 Series units, especially after 10+ years of use. We replaced the evaporator coil with a genuine OEM part, performed a full vacuum and refrigerant recharge, and cleaned the condenser. The freezer was fully restored to proper operation in a single visit. Sub-Zero units are built to last, but over time the evaporator coil can corrode and develop small leaks. In dual-compressor models, this failure may affect only the freezer compartment. Common signs of evaporator failure include: • Freezer not maintaining temperature • Ice buildup behind the panel • Short cycling or clicking sounds • Food thawing We provide full diagnostics, sealed system repairs, and preventive maintenance for Sub-Zero freezers throughout San Diego, Rancho Penasquitos, Rancho Bernardo, and La Jolla, using factory-grade OEM parts.
