We're based in Escondido, on Sky Dr. in 92026. That means when your refrigerator quits on a 100-degree afternoon, we're not driving up from downtown San Diego in traffic — we're already in North County.
Big Joe Appliance Repair Service has been repairing appliances across San Diego County since 2017. We run separate teams for standard household appliances, premium refrigeration, and commercial kitchen equipment. Three of our eight technicians work exclusively on sealed systems — compressors, condensers, evaporators and refrigerant work — and we're EPA-certified for all refrigerant types.
We keep common parts on the truck and stock heavy premium components in our own warehouse, so most repairs are finished within three days of the first visit and simple jobs the same day. Nothing is subcontracted.

Inland North County puts stress on appliances that coastal San Diego doesn't. Two things drive most of the repairs we see in Escondido.
Escondido summers regularly run 15–20 degrees hotter than the coast, and the valley holds that heat. Most refrigerators and freezers are designed to operate in ambient temperatures up to roughly 100°F — a garage in Escondido in August can exceed that.
What happens: the condenser can't shed heat into air that's already hot, so the compressor runs longer and longer cycles. Over a few summers that constant strain is what kills the compressor. The warning signs come first — a unit that runs almost continuously, a freezer that softens ice cream, a garage fridge that recovers slowly after the door is opened.
What helps: keep the condenser coils clean, give the unit several inches of clearance for airflow, and don't put a standard refrigerator in an uninsulated garage if you can avoid it — garage-rated models are built for the wider temperature range. If your unit is already running constantly, have it checked before the compressor goes.
North County water is hard, and scale is the quiet killer of anything that takes on water.
Where we find it:
What helps: replace refrigerator water filters on schedule, run a descaling cycle in the dishwasher periodically, and check washer inlet screens if fill times are getting longer. A water softener solves most of it at the source.
If you're seeing any of these symptoms, call 858-224-9188 — the diagnostic is credited toward the repair.
Refrigerators · Washers · Dryers · Dishwashers · Ovens & ranges · Microwaves
Fridge not cooling · running constantly · ice maker not producing · washer won't drain or spin · washer takes forever to fill · dryer no heat · dishwasher not draining or leaving residue · oven not heating or heating unevenly · burning smell · error codes
All major brands — LG, Samsung, Whirlpool, KitchenAid, GE, Bosch, Maytag, Frigidaire, Kenmore, Speed Queen and more.
Standard repairs run $250–$550 with a $49 diagnostic, credited toward the repair.
Sub-Zero · Wolf · Viking · Thermador · Miele · BlueStar
The custom homes in Hidden Meadows, Rancho San Pasqual and Harmony Grove run the same built-in refrigeration and pro ranges as coastal San Diego — and those appliances can't simply be swapped out when something fails. Replacing a built-in means cabinetry work, panel matching, and weeks without a refrigerator.
Not cooling · running constantly · ice maker not producing · sealed-system leaks · compressor failure · control board and wiring faults · Wolf range won't ignite or shows control errors
Our technicians are trained on Sub-Zero and Wolf systems. Premium repairs start around $950 and carry a 1 to 3 year warranty on parts and labor.
When a Sub-Zero built-in reaches 15–20 years, most companies won't touch it. They quote two new units and walk away.
We rebuild it instead — sealed system, compressor, gaskets, evaporator fan and control board, all genuine OEM, keeping your cabinet and panels. The work carries a 3-year warranty.
Recent rebuild: a Sub-Zero built-in where another company had refused the job and quoted a full replacement of both units. We rebuilt it completely — $7,800, backed by a 3-year warranty.

Walk-in coolers · walk-in freezers · commercial refrigerators & freezers · commercial ovens · ice machines · commercial mixers (including Hobart) · hoods & ventilation
Escondido's restaurants, breweries, tasting rooms and grocers run equipment that can't be down for a week. We handle temperature loss, compressor and sealed-system repair, oven calibration and control faults, ice machine repair, mixer drive and gearbox work, and hood and ventilation service — plus installation and commissioning of commercial ovens and ventilation systems.
Commercial diagnostic is $150, credited toward the repair.
Commercial service — call 858-224-9188.
We diagnose it once and fix it once. Our goal is a repair that holds, not a callback every six months. When we're inside an appliance, we look for what's about to fail next and tell you before it does.
Repair vs. replace — a clear rule. We recommend replacement only when the repair would cost more than 80% of a comparable new unit. Below that, repair is almost always the better decision — and we'll tell you honestly which side of that line your appliance is on.
We don't push you toward the expensive option — or hide the cheaper one. When a lower-cost alternative exists, we explain it, along with its risks, and let you decide.
Family owned, not a franchise. The owner personally handles premium jobs and oversees dispatch.

My Sub-Zero is 20 years old and I was told to replace it. Is that true? Often not. We rebuild Sub-Zero built-ins — replacing the sealed system, compressor, gaskets, fan and control board with genuine OEM parts while keeping your cabinet and panels. A rebuild carries a 3-year warranty and costs a fraction of a new built-in plus the cabinetry work a replacement requires.
Why does my refrigerator run constantly in a coastal home? Near the coast, salt air corrodes condenser coils, so the coil sheds heat less efficiently and the compressor runs longer to compensate. Left alone, that strain leads to sealed-system failure. Annual coil cleaning and inspection prevents most of it. If your refrigerator is running more than it used to, have it checked — call 858-224-9188.
Do you repair commercial kitchen equipment in Del Mar? Yes. We service walk-in coolers and freezers, commercial refrigerators, ovens, ice machines, mixers including Hobart, and hoods and ventilation for restaurants along Camino Del Mar and throughout Del Mar. We also handle installation and commissioning of commercial ovens and ventilation. The commercial diagnostic is $150.

Today our team was busy with a built-in refrigerator General Electric. A customer contacted us and explained that the ice maker in their home appliance was not working. We sent our experienced technician to the customer the same day. Several reasons can cause an ice maker to stop working in a fridge, including a clogged or frozen water line, a damaged water inlet valve, or a malfunctioning ice maker module. Additionally, using the wrong type of water filter or failing to replace the filter as per the manufacturer's instructions can cause ice maker problems. Our specialist made a quick diagnostic and found that the ice maker module needed to be replaced. He replaced the faulty device the same day. Now the refrigerator doesn’t have any problems and owners can use the ice maker as before.

Today a customer phoned us and asked to make maintenance of their old refrigerator Sub-Zero. We sent our experienced technician to do this job. He visited the customer as soon as possible. Upon arrival, he made a full diagnostic of the fridge. Also, he inspected the gaskets for signs of wear and tear. Besides our specialist found that condenser coils were covered with dust and were very dirty. He cleaned the condenser coils thoroughly. Clean condenser coils ensure good working conditions for the compressor, the most important part of the internal system. Further, our specialist also cleaned the compressor area in full. Regular maintenance of a Sub-Zero fridge is crucial to ensure its proper functioning and prevent breakdowns. Now owners enjoy their well-working fridge.
